Worship is an essential religious expression of faith. It is a common opinion that participating in a worship service is to be blessed. “I was blessed by the service” could mean the singing was good, the sermon was fantastic or we felt the presence of God. Likewise, we also hear dispirited remarks when the singing or the sermon is not to the liking of the participants. But, do we come to worship to be blessed or to bless? Who is supposed to be blessed, is it the worshipper or the one who is worship?
The prophet Micah reminds the people of Israel that worship is about bringing delight to the Lord and not the other way around. It is not feeling delighted by our religious experiences and achievements. In the same manner, we do not come to worship God expecting to be blessed but to please the Lord by offering what he requires of us. Our blessing is to bless the Lord!
